As President of the Brentwood School Board, I’m proud of the collaborative spirit of the Brentwood School Board as we work to improve the educational experiences for our most vulnerable students. I'm asking for your vote on November 5.
Hi! I’m Thuy (Twee) DaoJensen and I’m running for re-election to Brentwood School Board. Four years ago, when I won my election to the Brentwood School Board, the world was in the midst of a global pandemic. In uncertain times, I worked together with other Board members to ensure that every BUSD student had a Chromebook for distance learning, supplied meals to our students facing food insecurity challenges, and passed out covid test kits. Later, the Board voted unanimously to reopen our schools for in-person learning and to provide services and extra support to our school administrators, teachers, staff, and students.
At the age of four, I was a boat refugee and escaped with my family from Vietnam. We were rescued by an American naval ship in the Pacific Ocean which took us to a refugee camp before resettling us in the United States. I learned to speak English in an American public school. I believe in the core principle that all children should have access to a quality public education and educational opportunities, regardless of their race, socio-economic status, or immigration status. It is so important to maintaining our shared values in American democracy.
Before moving back to California, I was an education professor. I designed and taught Diversity & Equity courses and prepared new teachers entering the teaching profession. As a School Board member, I have used my knowledge to advocate for BUSD to engage in an Equity Audit to determine what improvements could occur in the school culture that would increase student engagement and academic achievement. It is important and necessary work to ensure we are inclusive of all students.
